Los Robles Blood Lab

Shaffer Building Co. is providing preconstruction & construction services for a $1.3M blood lab renovation at Los Robles Regional Medical Center, designed by Haines & Oakley. The scope includes constructability review, estimating, and project scheduling for a comprehensive reconfiguration of the existing laboratory space. The side-by-side floor plans show a significant reorganization of the lab layout, consolidating and modernizing the hematology, blood bank, and mechanical room areas while introducing new workstation configurations and improved circulation paths to support current diagnostic workflows and equipment.

The existing lab photo shows a functioning but dated space with open bench layouts and overhead fluorescent lighting typical of older hospital laboratories. The proposed design rationalizes the floor plan to accommodate updated analyzers and processing equipment, adds dedicated rooms where the existing layout relied on open areas, and improves the relationship between the blood bank and hematology sections. Shaffer’s preconstruction involvement allows the team to identify phasing strategies that will keep critical lab services operational during construction, a particularly important consideration given that blood lab functions cannot simply be shut down during a hospital renovation. This project is currently under construction.
